Design with passion and purpose

Design with passion and purpose

Passion is energy. Feel the power from focusing on what excites you. - Oprah Winfrey

Designing with passion is about infusing my work with emotion, purpose and connection. Having this purpose gives my work a sense of meaning.

Passion in energy quote

I recently had the opportunity to do some volunteer work for Little Red. Little Red is a non-profit which raises money for Huntsman Cancer Institute.

This is a cause very close to my heart. Cancer affects everyone we know. I lost my mom at age 15 to cancer. This left a lasting impact of my life and gave me a new perspective on what really matters.

Inspiring, supporting and encouraging others

Prioritizing my health (mind, body and soul)

I am passionate about being part of something bigger than myself.

Design has allowed me to use my creativity in a meaningful way.

Bonneville Cycling Club is the organizer of the annual Little Red charity ride. This event attracts more than 3,500 women to raise money for the fight against cancer. Bonneville Cycling Club is a non-profit organization in Utah. They provide education and riding opportunities for all cyclists from novice to Expert.

Little Red is a fully supportive, non-competitive women’s cycling event. The ride takes place in Lewiston, Utah in June every year. Riders can choose from 17 miles, 27 miles, 50 miles, 70 miles or 100 miles depending on their abilities.

Volunteers are vital to the success of this event. I am excited to be able to volunteer my graphic design services to help this cause.

Every year they choose a new theme for the event. This year’s theme was Pedal and Paris. A Parisian theme with a feminine, whimsical tone.

The committee needed a cohesive design for all event materials. This included a logo, jersey designs, social media assets and other marketing materials.

After meeting with the committee and discussing details, I started the design process.

The first step was creating a mood board. The images for the mood board are playful, sophisticated, feminine and hand drawn.

Next, I explored several font options. The chosen font has a refined and elegant feeling. This font pairs feels connected with the delicate flower and Eiffel tower accent.

The illustration for the jersey and logo is a hand drawn woman on a bike wearing a beret. She has a basket of flowers. The flowers expanded into different color options for the jersey designs.

The men’s jersey features a wolf. This is incorporated on the men's jersey every year and relates to the theme of Little Red Riding Hood.

The logos for the event needed to be flexible to allow for use in many locations. There are three logo versions. A text only option with the flower, a layered version with the Eiffel tower and an illustrated version.

This allows for different layouts and uses.

The color palette is bright, happy and feminine. These bold colors stand out on the pink jersey.

These colors represent:

Pink - playful, feminine, happy

Blue - strength, loyalty

Purple - ambition, imagination

Green - fresh, growth

I explored several illustration styles. The design of the woman on the bike is a delicate, feminine, hand-drawn style. These elements work together to create a cohesive feeling across all materials.

To ensure consistency, brand guidelines were created.

This maintains a cohesive look and feel across all materials and vendors.

The design expands into additional brand collateral including jerseys, shirts, hats, socks, social media and marketing materials. I am so glad I participated in the event this year. It inspires me to see incredible women of all different ages and abilities. They come together every year to raise money for Huntsman Cancer Institute. Everyone is so kind and encouraging. They cheered each other on along the way.

The volunteers were all so friendly, helpful and enthusiastic. I love the energy of everyone coming together to support and encourage each other for a common cause.

I loved being a part of this event. I was able to ride with five amazing friends. We had such a fun time. I am looking forward to next year!

If you would like to participate in the ride next year follow along and stay up to date.

If you would like support the cause you can donate to Huntsman Cancer Institute
